Nanhai Profile

Nanhai, one of the five districts under the administrative authority of Foshan, Guangdong, is a well-known place for reform and investment. Located in the hinterland of the Pearl River Delta, it neighbors Guangzhou in the east, next to Hong Kong and Macao in the south, and thus becomes the center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Economic Cooperation Circle, the geographic center of the Pearl River Integration, and the center of Guangzhou-Foshan Metropolitan Circle with developed traffic net. It has a total area of 1073.82 km2, seven towns and subdistricts under its administrative authority (with the district government in Guicheng Subdistrict), permanent population of 2.6 million, and more than 400 thousand overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

Nanhai is a place famous for its long history and rich culture. It became the prefecture in the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C.) and the county in the Sui Dynasty (581-618), named as "Nanhai" since 2200 years ago, and was a part of Nanpanshun Integration (Hanhai, Panyu, Shunde). The birth of great men, including Kang Youwei, Chen Qiyuan, Zhan Tianyou, Zou Boqi, Huang Feihong, He Xiangning and Ye Wen, have brought glories to this place of cultural fame.

In 2012, Nanhai has the local GDP of RMB 196.6 billion, local public financial budget revenue of RMB 12.9 billion, and saving balances in financial institutions of RMB 334.6 billion, all top-ranked nationwide among similar areas.

There were many legends related to dreams in Nanhai from time immemorial.

Kang Youwei dreamed to "manage the nation" and engineered the Wu Xu Reform (the reform movement of 1898); Huang Feihong dreamed to carry forward the spirit of Chinese Kungfu and became the great master in martial arts in the South China; Chen Qiyuan dreamed to save the nation with industries and established Jichanglong Silk Reeling Factory as the pioneer; and Zou Boqi dreamed to rejuvenate China with science and devoted himself to scientific research and became the forerunner of modern science......
